FAQs: Diamond Cut Ski Grinder

  • "What does the pattern look like"?

The Diamond Cut Ski Grinder does not leave any discernable pattern or 'structure' on the ski base.

  • "Is there only one grit available"?

Yes. We supply the machine with a 120 grit grinding cylinder. We have tested 100, 120, 140, 180, and 200 grits and have determined the 120 to be the most universal. The higher grits are slow to remove material and do not open the pours for good wax adsorption.

  • "What about side edges"?

At this time, there is no side-edge attachment for this grinder.

  • "How does it cut fresh P-tex to get things level again"?

Typically, in our shop, we use a panzer file to remove the bulk of the high spots, then run the ski a few passes over the grinder.

  • "Does the machine run off 220 or a household 120 volt outlet"?

Just a regular North American 110 volt outlet. That's the beauty behind this grinder. You can plug it in anywhere! No special electrical hookups, no phase converters, no electrician needed! It draws under 7 amps on start-up and around 4 amps without load.

  • "Is there plans for a wider snowboard one"?

Short answer? No. A wider machine would almost double the price, and at that point, you could almost buy a used stone grinder. The Diamond Cut Ski Grinder was not designed to compete in that market.

  • "How long will a stone last"?

Well...we don't exactly know. We've been using one in our shop for three years now and it's still going strong. With proper use, care and cleaning it should last a very long time. Diamonds are hard. Ski bases, not so much.

  • "Is it water cooled"?

Yes and no. It has a cooling/lubricating fluid that is sprayed onto the grinding cylinder. We have tested about 20 different liquids and finally settled on a proprietary emulsion that we have created here at Boardworks. It is a oil based liquid. Natural or water-based waxes are not compatible unless you thoroughly clean the base, following grinding.

  • "What is the finish of the base edge after grinding"?

The base edge will be ground towards zero degrees and look/ feel rough. You will need to restore the angle with your diamond file routine. NOTE: For a 1 degree base bevel, you remove about 1/2 the thickness of a human hair.

  • "What is the warranty"?

Boardworks Gear Lab inc. provides a two-year warranty on all parts, excluding consumables. If a part beaks or wears out prematurely due to no fault of your own, we will ship you a replacement part for free. It will be up to you to install the part.

  • "Is there a demo video available"?

    Coming soon...

  • "Does it give you any base angle"?

No. This is an entry level grinder. No bells or whistles.

  • "Does it leave structure"?

If we’re talking about the pattern, then nope. This grinder was designed with the smaller rental shops and micro-shops in mind. It was never intended to compete with the big boys. Adding structure to a ski requires auto-feed and speed control on the machine.
